FAQs

My StoreVault S500 shows an "11" on the front panel status display. What does this mean?
An information code of "11" means that a StoreVault has performed its Power On Self Test, booted Data ONTAP StoreVault Edition, has an IP address and is fully functional. This is the normal state of the status display.

What do the POST codes mean on an S500?
The StoreVault POST codes that flash by during boot are indications of low-level component and system diagnostic functions. You may see a longer wait at code "78." At code "00" Data ONTAP StoreVault Edition boots, at code "12" the NVRAM card is tested and when the system is up and ready code "11" shows.

My StoreVault shows an "E1" on the front panel status display. What does this mean?
An information code of "E1" means that one or all Ethernet ports have been unable to detect a DHCP server and have received the default address of 10.10.10.10. Ensure that cables are connected to the ports and run the discovery portion of StoreVault Manager again. You may also want to check your DHCP server to see if it has assigned an address. The MAC addresses of the StoreVault Ethernet cards are written on the back of the unit, on a label near the NIC ports.

If my front panel shows "E1" what do I do?
You'll need to change the IP address of your client computer to be on the same network, for example, 10.10.10.20, and then re-run the discovery portion of StoreVault Manager. Consult your Operating System's documentation for more information.

StoreVault Manager does not find my StoreVault. What do I do?
Be sure that both Ethernet ports are connected to an active DHCP server. If the StoreVault cannot detect a DHCP server it will assign a default address of 10.10.10.10 to the Ethernet card(s) and show an information code of "E1" on the front panel.

Does it matter which Ethernet port I connect to?
No, thought it may make setup simpler if you use more than one. See Q3 above.

What about the SCSI port? What is it for?
The SCSI port is a 68-pin LVD connector to be used with tape drives and tape autoloaders. It is NOT hot-pluggable and devices should always be connected while the StoreVault is powered off or after the port has been disabled using StoreVault Manager. For a list of qualified devices, visit support.storevault.com. External storage arrays will not function on this port, so don't even bother.

Does the StoreVault support Apple Macintosh computers?
Data ONTAP StoreVault Edition does not support the native Apple Filing Protocol, also known as AppleShare. However, it is completely compliant with the NFS standard for UNIX file sharing and uses Microsoft's CIFS protocol for Windows file sharing. MacOS X offers support for both of these protocols. For more details, see the knowledge base article on the Support Portal, or the white paper in the Resource Center.

What is AutoSupport?
AutoSupport is a unique feature in Data ONTAP StoreVault Edition that invisibly and automatically sends software versions, system logs, disk alerts and alarm condition information back to the support group in the StoreVault Division. It does NOT track what is stored on the disks and does not monitor or provide any visibility into the contents or behavior of the system. Customers tell us that this dramatically improves the quality of their support experience because our Support Engineers have an idea of what may be happening with your system, and will avoid many of the rote troubleshooting exercises. Please note that the StoreVault's AutoSupport is simply inbound and is not proactive, like NetApp's AutoSupport. In other words, the StoreVault Division doesn't automatically generate a trouble ticket and a replacement part won't just show up on your doorstep.

My Telco rack kit doesn’t seem to fit properly. What is going on?
The 2-post Telco rack kit supplied with the StoreVault does not make use of the supplied mid-mount hardware. Simply use the left and right equipment tray halves to support the StoreVault, and thread the bezel thumbscrews into the front of your Telco rack. The system will be supported in the center and will cantilever out to the rear.
